Understanding Airline Award Fuel Surcharges
Why some award redemptions cost hundreds in cash even when the miles seem cheap, and how to avoid the worst of them.
What are surcharges?
Fuel surcharges (also called carrier-imposed surcharges or YQ/YR taxes) are airline-imposed fees on top of mileage redemptions. They can run $300–$1,200 per ticket on long-haul premium cabins.
Programs with low/no surcharges
Air Canada Aeroplan (most partners), United MileagePlus, Cathay Pacific, Alaska Mileage Plan, ANA on partners, Avianca LifeMiles, Singapore KrisFlyer.
Programs with high surcharges
