Use the airline's own search to confirm availability — but always check from a partner program with a better redemption rate. Examples: Air Canada Aeroplan for Star Alliance, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles or Alaska Mileage Plan for oneworld partners, Virgin Atlantic for SkyTeam (Delta) and ANA, Flying Blue for SkyTeam.

Watch the surcharges

Some programs (Lufthansa, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic) levy hefty fuel surcharges on partner premium cabins. Others (Aeroplan, LifeMiles, Cathay, Singapore KrisFlyer) generally don't.
